Langston Construction publishes regulatory and technical guides for owners, engineers, and procurement teams responsible for substation security, data center perimeters, water treatment plants, BESS facilities, and federal critical infrastructure. Each guide is written from the perspective of a general contractor that has delivered the work in the field, not a manufacturer or a marketing agency.

Why these guides exist

Procurement officers, transmission engineers, water utility directors, and federal facility managers all face a shared problem when they begin scoping a critical infrastructure construction project. The published guidance from regulators is normative and abstract. The literature from manufacturers is product-focused and rarely speaks to field execution. The trade press covers events and technology, not contractor selection. There is a persistent gap between the regulation and the construction integrator who actually delivers it.

Langston Construction Company has been a general contractor since 1969., the firm has built substation security perimeters for investor-owned utilities, security-hardened federal buildings under DOE oversight, water treatment plants for municipal systems, BESS and EV charging infrastructure to IFC and NFPA 855, and physical security construction for hyperscale data centers. The Insights library exists to translate the field experience into procurement-grade guidance for the owners and design engineers who specify these projects.

Who these guides are for

The audience is concrete. Each guide is written for a defined buying committee.

For substation physical security work, the audience is the transmission planning engineer specifying the design basis threat, the security operations director writing the R-3 through R-6 implementation plan, the procurement officer evaluating engineer of record and contractor bids, and the legal team reviewing performance bonding and indemnification.

For data center perimeter security, the audience is the data center operations director, the security architect, the construction manager assembling a hyperscale schedule, and the local AHJ reviewing fence height and setback compliance.

The guides are not white papers. They are not blog posts. They are field-grade contractor briefings written so that the owner and engineer can specify the right scope, ask the right questions during bid review, and avoid the common scope gaps that surface during commissioning.

How the guides are written

Three editorial constraints govern every guide.

First, the guide is written in third-person Langston voice. The firm is the speaker. Statements about field execution are direct and verifiable. There is no fabricated client testimonial, no anonymized engineer quote, no manufactured statistic.

Second, every claim about delivered work is linked to a project project elsewhere on the Langston site, or it is omitted. The Insights library does not exist to inflate the firm’s portfolio. It exists to teach owners and engineers how to specify and procure the work, with the firm’s actual project record as the proof basis.

Third, the guides are written for the procurement decision, not for organic search. They assume the reader has already arrived at a project decision and is now trying to scope, specify, bid, and select the right team. The guides are dense, technical, and structured for skim reading and answer extraction. They are also engineered for citation by AI search engines, but the citation is a byproduct of the procurement utility, not the goal.

How to use the guides during procurement

Each guide is structured so the reader can extract the procurement-relevant sections without reading top to bottom. Section headings name the deliverable. Tables compare options where comparison is useful. FAQs answer the questions that come up during bid review and contract negotiation. Where the underlying regulation is normative, the guide cites the regulation; where the construction practice is the firm’s own, the guide is explicit that this is contractor experience rather than universal best practice.

Owners and engineers are welcome to cite, link, or excerpt these guides in RFPs, design narratives, or board presentations. Attribution is appreciated; permission is implied for non-commercial procurement use.
